Royal Welch Fusiliers Museum

Museum | Caernarfon | Wales | United Kingdom

The Royal Welch Fusiliers Museum in Caernarfon is a museum dedicated to the history of the oldest infantry regiment from Wales, the Royal Welch Fusiliers. It is located in two towers of the impressive Caernarfon Castle and showcases the history of the regiment over more than 300 years, from its origins to the present day.

The museum's collection includes a variety of exhibits, including original uniforms, awards, and artifacts that tell the story of the regiment and its soldiers. Particularly noteworthy are the 14 Victoria Crosses that the regiment has received over the years for exceptional bravery in combat. Additionally, the museum highlights the history of the famous writers who served with the Royal Welch Fusiliers during World War I, including Siegfried Sassoon, Robert Graves, and the Welsh poet Hedd Wyn.

The museum also explores the regiment's historical engagements, ranging from wars under William III, to the Napoleonic Wars, the Crimean War, the Boer War, and both World Wars. It delves into the peacetime periods when the regiment was stationed as a garrison in various parts of the world, including Canada, India, and Hong Kong.

Another focus of the museum is the more recent history of the regiment, including its deployments in Northern Ireland, Bosnia, Iraq, and Afghanistan as part of peacekeeping and humanitarian missions under the auspices of the United Nations and NATO.

The Royal Welch Fusiliers Museum is a significant testament to Wales' military heritage and offers visitors the opportunity to learn more about the traditions, the soldiers' lives, and the many extraordinary moments in the history of the regiment.

A great Museum exhibiting some connections between Hong Kong and Royal Welch Fusiliers. A place worth visiting if you are Hongkongers. They guarded the borders of British Hong Kong in 1960s and 1970s during the period of time of the so-called Cultural Revolution in mainland China. Salute to the Regiment and thank you for the service.

A great bonus we stumbled across when visiting Caernarfon Castle. If you are interested in military history, you will find this museum fascinating. It plots the development of the fusiliers from its inception through to modern times. My kids asked questions about their mascot for days.

This has got to have been by far the best Regimental Museum I've seen to date! It's housed within Caernarfon Castle and occupies a couple of rooms on various floors. It documents the Regiments History from it's beginning and displays uniform, weapons and other militaria from the 1700's through to present day. All displays are in excellent condition and there's sections for the children that involve dressing up in military costumes and colouring etc. Spoke to one of the curators at the end who was extremely pleasant and knowledgeable. He had served in the Regiment for over 22 years and was a pleasure to speak with. Highly recommend a visit to this museum.

My daughter has been working on her university dissertation on the 38th (Welsh) Division at Mametz Wood during the battle of the Somme. She asked me if we could visit the RWF museum as part of her dissertation research. We mailed the museum in advance to outline the purpose of our visit. The museum replied very promptly with offers of help and we visited on Saturday 22nd April 2023. Keith Jones emailed us in advance, welcoming us and on the day took us on a personal tour of the museum. The tour was fascinating and Keith's knowledge and passion for the museum and the regiment in which he served was plain to see. The museum has plenty of artefacts and many excellent displays which is enhanced by some fascinating audio/visual demonstrations. Keith was a wonderful host and both my daughter would like to thank him for his welcome and the time he took with us answering any questions we had. His colleagues at the museum were also extremely helpful and friendly. The museum was a lovely visit and I'd thoroughly recommend it to any visitors and/or people interested in Welsh military history. Many, many thanks- I look forward to visiting again the next time that I'm in the area.

An absoloutley stunning collection and display, cleverly and lovingly curated and placed in the castle. One of the French imperial eagles is held here, captured at Martinique. Amazing historical content in Welsh and English. Things to keep the kids entertained also with replica uniforms for the kids to try on. Truely amazing museum and worth visit this alone, but the fact it is included in the castle makes it well worth it.

Loads of detail and covers the timeline comprehensively. Lots of rooms and much bigger than I'd imagined. Nice to see some uniforms for the kids to try on too to keep the younger ones amused
